D-Link 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure DNS-323 on Sale!

Over All Rating Reviews :
First impression was very good. Nice looking unit. Quiet. Small footprint. Easy setup (if it worked..).
I was going to use this nas to store my media library. I have a large library and quite a few files are in russian, polish, hungarian, german.. you know - all those strange looking characters. Guess what? SOME of them do not transfer correctly - filenames got truncated after a character the 323 didn't like. Upgraded to the newest firmware (out today Dec 18) - it changed things but didn't fix. OTHER files started to give me problems. For example - it removes the capital Ja (in russian) but regular ja goes through ok. Luckily for me Amazon pays return postage - it goes back to Amazon tomorrow.

I've been looking for a RAID-1 NAS box for home for a while. Then after reading lots of reviews I decided to buy this one. I've had it for about 3 weeks, and so far it's been great. Easy to set up, fast and it powers down the drives when inactive (I love this feature). Good job D-Link! I got burned with you a long time ago (with a webcam that I could never get to work) but it looks like you learned from your mistakes :)

I love having storage accessible from any computer in my home. It is simple to set up too, and I'm not a computer genius. I find it a bit slow, but I have very long distances between my modem, hub and switch, which likely explain that problem. I recommend it certainly over on line backup sites.

Love it. Set up was nice and easy. I'm not a hardcore user who has done any hacks or anything like that. Just set it up to be a simple storage drive and it works perfectly, especially on my gigabit LAN via DLink dir-655. Mapped the drive in windows so it acts as a local hdd. I've had it running for about 8months now, w/ no problems what so ever. Love it!

D-Link 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure DNS-323 Decide Now

Over All Rating Reviews :
I just bought this device and wanted to share some key points with you.
By the way I upgraded the firmware to the latest version 1.2b.

1) The drive can not be configured in any way until you install a harddrive and let the NAS format it. This means that if you don't pick a drive that the original firmware supports your out of luck.

2) There are far to many Firefox related bugs to mention so if you want to configure this drive make sure you can access the NAS from the IE browser.

3) They still have bugs related to file names. I have gotten numerous warnings that a file name is too long. However, the file name is usually less than 30 characters. I have made tests and found that file names that it originally reported as an error can actually be copied to the NAS individually with out error. I think the error arises when trying to copy directories of thousands of files. Also it is a bit scary when it messes up due to this warning. For me it created an entire subtree where every file and directory name was truncated to 8 characters. It does seem however that if you choose the "auto rename" option when you get this error everything works fine (however, I haven't tested fully).

4) Their online support sucks. Every inquiry has resulted in email telling me to call their sales department, which is pretty much useless. I have contacted a support rep by phone and she was helpful but not past basic configuration.

I am still hopeful for this device, I think with proper monitoring of file names I might still be able to use it. Network setup was a snap, all of my systems on my network easily found the device and mapped a drive to it. I have set up the FTP features but have not yet used them. Also they seem to be producing firmware upgrades fairly fast so hopefully they will continue to fix these problems in the near future. Also a lot of people reported having problems with the ext3 file system. In the latest firmware they removed this option.

Good luck.

While Martin's comments are quite accurate, I think that for the majority of users (home) this system will work quite well. This should not be seen as anything but a home unit. I access it from XP, Vista, OS X and linux with no difficulties.

For file safety it would be better if they supported ext3, rather than just ext2, and they should document it. But unless you kill the power to this thing without letting it shut down, it shouldn't be an issue. (And like all data storage devices, it should be on a decent UPS.)

Tech support is tedious, but if you refuse to simply reformat and try again, they will get you to someone who knows something about this stuff. And this is pretty much par for the course with this kind of consumer device.

For home or very small office use, I think that most people will simply create a use-everything group and put all users in that group. And for private data you can create private folders. The tedious part is that a user can only be in one group.

As for different user names and passwords, mapping a hetwork drive isn't that difficult for most people, so long as one doesn't need fine-grained control. And it can be done once and forgotten - for most needs.

Also, if one is a hacker, there is a very active group of people writing additional ways to manipulate the linux environment on this device. For instance, though the USB port is meant only to use used as a printer port, it is trivially easy to set it so that an external usb drive can be connected to backup the device.

Martin also ignored performance, yet this is perhaps the best-performing device out there for the money. And, at this price point, this thing delivers a lot for the money.

Dave

Low Price D-Link 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure DNS-323

Over All Rating Reviews :
I originally wanted this product as a RAID NAS to backup my music and photos. Then I got a PS3 and thought it'd be a great bonus to use the media server component. Here's where it fares:

NAS:
This is great as a RAID NAS. I didn't want a whole computer running to act as a file sharing device. Obviously, you can do that, too. I didn't want a network attached device or external USB drive without RAID because I'm looking for the reliability of RAID (two drives that mirror each other so that if one fails the other still has your data). Many of the RAID NAS devices in this price range have one built in drive or some other mechanism where if a drive fails, you have to send it back to the manufacturer to replace the drive(s) and rebuild it. What's the point?!? I popped in two 500 gig deskstars in there and away it went.

MEDIASERVER:
I wanted to share the photos and music I put on the network with my PS3. Using the latest (1.04) firmware, I was able to set it up and have it running with 10 minutes. I could play files just fine. HOWEVER the media server built into the NAS would unreliably provide MP3 Tags. For instance, it would allow for a "Rock" folder, but not "Soul". On the PS3, they were just listed under "Other". If I copied those same "Soul" files via the NAS to the PS3 HD, or put them on a USB Drive, the PS3 read the tags fine, so it was obviously a problem with the mediaserver. To verify even futher, I used a mediaserver on my desktop with those same files, again, and the PS3 saw them and categorized them just fine.

So... If you want to share a few songs, play one album at a time, view one folder of photos at a time- this will be awesome out-of-box. If you want to rip 300 CDs to the NAS and play by genre, rating, year, etc... You're screwed! ...Or are you? The DNS-323 allows you access to it's guts (Linux) so you can actually install a GOOD mediaserver on your NAS. I installed Twonky (Aprox $40) in about half an hour at most. You can find the info on the DNS-323 wiki. It's a lot easier and safer than it sounds.

So... all in all, this is a great device. Perfect RAID NAS. Okay Media Server (minus one star for that). But with the flexibility to install a good media server and other linux components like a web server.

Installation:
Piece of cake. Out of the box it had the 1.03 firmware. I updated that first- easy. Then I added the 2 drives- very easy. Then I logged in via the browser (I never installed the dlink software!)- easy. It asked me how I wanted to use the drives and then formatted them- easy. The PS3 automagically found the mediaserver- Super Easy! Figuring out why it didn't tag my music properly- Frustrating! Installing Telnet and a new MediaServer... Not bad if you have a clue about computers (FTP, and basic Linux).

Performance: Unsure. I'm using wireless right now and there seems to be a delay inbetween songs. It might be better wired, or maybe that's just a limitation of streaming from a separate device. Also, I've noticed multiple disconnects from my DSL. This almost never happened before (maybe once in 6 months). Right now my DSL modem is also the wired/wireless router- not the best option in performance.

It installed with no problems with 2 500GB Seagate drives. It is accessible to all of my computers running Vista and XP Pro.
I've tried it as 2 separate drives and Raid 1. I've used the Vista backup system, Acronis and Synctoy. All successfully.
It spins down nicely and wakes up fast. It is really quiet.
Great product.

Over All Rating Reviews :
I have used the DNS-323 for 6 months with success, but some hassles. I would be rating it a top product except the original device failed after 6 months and persistence is required to get adequate product support. Because of the failure and product support issue, I can only rate is as average.

The device is very easy to set up and use. I only use it as a network RAID backup drive and do not use any of the other features. In that use it performed flawlessly until the failure

After 6 months, the device began shutting itself down and would not stay operating. Tech support told me to send it back and I did so on an exchange basis. The only money I will be out is for shipping, $11.

When I got it back, there were no instructions other than to go through the configuration which formats the drives and thus would have lost my data. I called tech support and they told me initially there is no way to avoid the reformat and data loss. I was persistent in saying that that makes no sense for a backup device! Finally after after lots of consultations, they said to try to remap the drive in Windows Explorer. It worked! I now have all my data and a reconditioned drive. I am just waiting to see how it holds up.

D-Link 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure DNS-323 Immediately

Over All Rating Reviews :
I don't normally write reviews, but I wanted to comment on how well this device works.

I purchased this to share data with my family over my home network. During my research, I discovered the FTP server functionality. I was skeptical, but spent a little time on D-Link's DLinkTV site in their support section. If you search for episodes 4 (port forwarding) and 7 (DNS-323 FTP Server Setup), you should have no problems setting up the FTP function. I went one step further by creating users and groups in my setup so there would be a required logon, eliminating any anonomous longons.

The only CON I can think of is that the hard drives go to sleep after some pre-determined time and when you access data from them after they have been 'asleep', it can take about 30 seconds for them to come back online. While this is a little inconvenient when you're accessing data, it is nice to know when you're not using them (90+ % of the time) they are not spinning.

I have found the data transfer rate on my home network (gigabit components) to be quite well.

For the FTP download speeds from remote locations, you will find the limiting factor will be your upload speed via your service provider. If you are in a system with high upload bandwidth, you may find exceptional upload speeds.

Overall, I'm very happy with this device.

Best D-Link 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure DNS-323

Over All Rating Reviews :
I have purchased several of enclosures and use the linksys NSLU2. I can say confidently this was by far the easiest of the external boxes to bring online. Through large file transfers, its looks to be 2x (or more) faster than my current NSLU2's. Not a scientific study, just an observation. Also much less time to configure. And having Raid 1 configuration is a bonus. It took a total of 20 minutes from opening to box to being online. Bulk of the time was in the formating and just deciding to go with Raid 1.

At this point, I can highly recommend this as a network attached storage option. Also I would recommend this for the average home user since the setup was not highly technical. Though I did bypass the CD and went straight to the IP assigned, I still say this is a very easy unit to setup overall.

D-Link 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure DNS-323 Review

Over All Rating Reviews :
I am generally happy with my this unit. It was easy to configure and has good speed across my gigabit network. There are/were a couple of things which have been glitches for me, however.
I need to restart this unit every seven to 10 days because it stops permitting access to the drives. Pressing the power button does not shut it down, I have to cut power to the box. Once it reboots, everything reconnects and all is well for another week or so.
I had a hybrid network. Two PCs and the D-Link were connected to a netgear firewall/gigabit switch. No problems there. However, the wireless portion of my network was connected to the Netgear switch and I was never able to get those two PCs connected to the D-Link. They could ping it, but not connect to the drives. I've since gone to a Linksys WRT330N router and the wireless and gigabit networks are now running through one router/switch. The mapping problems are gone.
I was unable to connect by HP Laserjet 1000 to the print server. Files would download to the D-Link and accumulate in the queue, but never print. Apparently, this older printer is not compatible. I tried using a Buffalo print server and got the same non-result, so I don't think the 323 is the problem on this.
I get good file transfer speeds and setup was a snap. Hardware setup is simple and robust. Drive security/access is not completely intuitive, but is workable once you figure it out. All said, I had this guy up, on-line and formatting the 500 gb drive in about 15 minutes.
