Made the mistake of buying this a couple of years ago, then shelved it for awhile. Now I've discovered that the Seagate drive shipped in it is bad and throwing an increasing crap-ton of SMART disk errors. Current non-beta firmware also has great behaviors like making shares you just renamed disappear (forcing a complete rewipe of the NAS to ever have a share by that name again), messing up created user accounts, etc. New beta firmware fixes some of that, but A) who knows to look for it? and B) who knows where to look for it? Not the average joe who just wants their NAS to work!

Customer support is absolutely terrible unless you're willing to troll message boards. The official support pages are contradictory and incomplete, and new versions of firmware are frequently only announced in forum messages. That, of course, is when they occur, since they insist on supporting every version of ReadyNAS to the beginning of time with a single firmware version, which takes the development cycle out to eons.

To be fair, the message board jedis are reasonably responsive (though I'm unclear if they all work for Netgear or are volunteers picking up the slack from this awful company) but for something that's ostensibly a failsafe solution, I don't trust it one little bit. Netgear has been churning out sheer crap for years, and it's a shame that ReadyNAS fell into their hole.

Two stars only because of the number of features and the user community. The hassle and lack of peace of mind isn't worth it though.

Works great as a network attached storage unit. Easy to set up, surprisingly small, and works fine.

But I have had no luck running an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer (which is listed by NetGear as a supported printer) through the built-in USB print server. If you check the ReadNAS forums, you will find lots of other people having the same troubles with various printers. I tried all the various workarounds people have suggested, with no success. I can send commands to the printer (such as head cleaning commands), but can't get an application to print to it. Finally gave up and reattached my Epson 2200 the old way through an Epson print server, which works fine.

Good choice if all you want is backup. Questionable choice if you are expecting to use the print server. I suspect there is nothing wrong with the hardware, but the NetGear software and tech support is lacking on this issue.

This is a nice little unit; I purchased this diskless unit (RND2000) and added Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS (although it is not on the Netgear compatibility list). Works just fine, and was more cost effective to do this, as opposed to purchasing the RND2110 (with the 1Tb drive). Both units showed up the same day - I popped in the drive, plugged in the network cable (provided) and powered it up - after about 30 minutes, the pulsating blue light turned to a steady blue, indicating the setup process was complete, and I was ready to go! On my home network I have Mac OSx, Linux (SuSE), Windows XP and Vista, all connecting to it and sharing files with no problems.

Although I'm not an IT professional, I have considerable experience working with computers. After painfully experiencing data loss with a previous NAS product, I chose ReadyNAS because of Netgear's reputation, warranty and what I perceived was the likelihood of good product support. Six months after trying to set up a lousy ReadyNAS Duo in my home to house our documents and media, I WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER NETGEAR NAS product if it were the last company on earth.

To begin with, you better know a lot about computers if you even expect to get a windows or mac computer to even see this thing on a network, much less reliably store your files for you(much much less use advanced features like the iTunes Server!). Six months after purchase the product manual is STILL not available online. For example, there is NO WAY my wife, who is a very intelligent woman with great experience using microsoft office, email, and adobe photoshop, could have EVER POSSIBLY gotten this thing configured to even show up on one of our computers.

I originally set my device up as RAID 1, preferring to avoid any of that proprietary XRAID stuff. This week I accidentally happened to see that it had spontaneously switched itself to XRAID. Since there is no manual, and the web page interface is anything but intuitive, I called tech support. I had actually paid over $100 extra to extend my tech support after purchase, but only after being assured I would have access to senior level tech support 24/7. FALSE. I just spent over 45 minutes on the phone with several individuals from half way around the world. In addition to having to ask them repeatedly to speak up so I could hear them, it took that long for them to actually repeat back to me what my complaint was. All I wanted to know was how to switch the stupid thing back to RAID 1. After several instances of waiting on hold for 5-10 minutes at a time, I was given the conclusion that this would require a senior level technician, none of whom were available (so much for 24/7!), and would call me back tomorrow.

Ultimately, here I am six months after purchase with an expensive paper weight in my hands. Unfortunately I work long hours and have had little free time to devote to this project, which is why I have had to put up with this garbage for so long. I have copied files to it, been told I don't have access to the files I created, and struggled to use the included NTI Shadow to create backups of my machines which have failed for myriad reasons. For me, the ReadyNAS experiment has been an abject failure. I really wish G-technology offered a NAS product, because I have never had trouble with any of their devices, and their tech support has been a pleasure. I guess I'll try Seagate or LaCie next.

I have not experienced any of the disappointments captured in other recent reviews. I researched several NAS products and this solution seemed the best value. I purchased the RND2000, which comes without any disk drives, and I purchased a WD Green 1TB with 32Mb cache. Right now I am only running one drive. I am quite happy with this setup. I use the DLNA server to serve movies and music to a D-Link DSM320RD media server, and the itunes server. I hope to use it with a DLNA-ready flatscreen in the near future. I also use it as a file server for central storage on my home network between two PCs, one of which runs a virtual machine as well. Several third-party add-on software are quite appealing. I will expand the memory in the future, but right now I do not need to. There are faster units, but I have not been disappointed with this unit's performance. The room it is in is typically 78-80 degrees F, and I only hear the fan run during periods of heavy reading or writing.

I have put the Netgear RND2150 ReadyNAS Duo 500 GB Desktop Network Attached Storage through the paces and for me it has passed with flying colors. I own a lot of external storage, and I've configured plenty of NAS devices for work and for home use. While the Netgear lineup of ReadyNAS devices are expensive, the extra features will put them over the top for many demanding users.

So ultimately, you will have to decide whether the extra features you can use with this guy are worth the cost. Alternatively you may decide you would rather stick to the external USB or firewire drives connected directly to you PC like the Western Digital 750 GB 7200RPM 16MB External Hard Drive. And there are middle of the road options like Drobo that offer some of these features at slightly lower cost. For me the answer to whether the ReadyNAS features are worth it is undoubtedly "Yes."

For starters, one of the biggest features isn't something many people will do right away, but rather something for down the road. You can change your drives yourself! That is a huge feature, that will allow you to add larger drives as they become cheaper. Alternatively you can add a second hard drive for RAID mirroring to give you an instant backup of your backup.

The ability to schedule downloads is going to become more and more important to people over time. I can tell you after testing it exptensively it has worked for me.

Also the easy networking really does allow you to set up secure shares very quickly. This is much easier than sharing an attached external hard drive like you can through your computer OS software. Many people never even get to the point where they are comfortable with those configs.

The connectors also allow you to daisy chain additional external drives off the back to add storage. Or you can hook up a USB printer for a print server. Once again, some other drives offer some of these features, but none offer all of them.

And installing this guy is "relatively" easy, although I still wouldn't be surprised if total novices still sought help. For the most part, once you set things up they will run on their own.

Unfortunately, you can't allocate both drive bays for online storage, at least not in a supported configuration. Still, I've got a pretty good feeling that limitation won't last forever. A minor firmware change to the raid controller bus along with a software update could easily make that possible.

Yes, the WD drives I love and LaCie and every other external hard drive is more economical. But none of those allow the easy expansion and longer useful life you will get out of this. When you add in the world of features this guy is ahead, it's clear that this is for more demanding users.

So if you have storage needs for your wired home or small / medium sized business office, check out this ReadyNas product family.

This is really a great machine. I am convinced that those folks who had data destroyed were not following the directions. This machine takes a little time, but I feel so much better with it protecting all of our data/pictures/music/etc.

I purchased the base model and then added two (2) 1000GB Seagate ST31000333AS for less than the price of the upgraded, 1 drive model. Now I have 1 TB of storage with two drives mirroring each other; the only thing that can bring us down is a fire.

You just have to take it slow. Install the unit and let it configure (about an hour if I remember), install the 1st big drive in slot 2 which will configure and then mirror the first drive (but only at the size of drive 1, 500GB, took about 4 hours), then slide out drive 1 and replace with 2nd big drive (drives are hot swappable, took about 4 more hours). Finally, it will want you to reboot the unit so it can realize the full 1TB of space. Took about 1 more hour.

All the while, it e-mails you the status of what it is up to so you know what to do next (if you fill out the proper fields) The Itunes server works well too (it took about 3-4 hours to find all of the 68GB of music I have). I haven't yet tried out the functionality of inviting family to look at pictures, but I find that a much better option then sorting out which pictures to sent to who.

this is hands down the best NAS device on the market.

i bought the cheap 500 gb one and replaced it with 2x seagate 7200.11 1 TB disks. my home is basically about 5 mac laptops... the readynas duo is connected to my DIR 655 draft n router... performance is EXCELLENT on Lan connect and wifi connection (n and g).

streaming itunes or HD video (1080p) is not even an issue.

does this thing survive disk crashes? absolutely. one of the 1 TB disk failed within 2 days... lucky the 2nd 1TB had the exact copy of the 1 TB disk (thanks to X-RAID technology by readynas). i had to return it to seagate and they gave me a new one. plugged that in the drive and the NAS started copying the other drive immediately with absolutely no performance degrading.

if you are a mac user (i'm running 10.5.6 on all the macs and couple of 10.4.11 machines) you will love it. there's a widget that you can download from the readynas user group site. works very nice. tells you temperature of both drives, how much it's full, the IP address, FAN speed and warnings of drive failures. EXCELLENT WIDGET. a must for anyone who already owns one of these.

if a friend with a windows machine comes over i can just click on a button the readynas frontview (browser based settings control) and turn on file transfer protocols for windows users.

supports jumbo frames (along with my DIR 655 router). streams all my photos, music, movies (mostly divx, ac3, h.264, etc.. no MKV) to my xbox 360... not a problem. the xbox never stops to buffer... prob because my router LAN port supports gigabit ethernet and so does the readynas duo... file transfer speeds are blindingly fast. make sure your running on cat 5e or cat 6 cables to take full advantage of everything readynas duo has to offer.

maybe one or two cons: 1) time machine is not officially support i think... there's like a semi hack on the readynas duo forum to force it to support time machine... to be honest i don't really use time machine because i always back up my files on the ready nas duo... don't really see the use of time machine if ur a person who regularly backs up
2) some of the user add/remove things are confusing.... i only have like 3 accounts and a guest account... 3) NO JBOD SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!! i know this is a NAS backup drive for regular consumers so I can understand why they didn't include this option for users... but hey i would still like to have the option to turn off XRAID and use it as JBOD!

overall i've been using it for about a year now... and IT'S WORKING FLAWLESSLY.

one big issue that came up recently is that seagate has been having major FIRMWARE PROBLEMS WITH SEAGATE 7200.11 DRIVES... the firmware have to be updated or you'll have a PAPER WEIGHT on your desk. TO THIS DATE... JAN 30 2009, THERE'S NO WAY FOR YOU TO UPDATE THE FIRMWARE ON THE SEAGATE DRIVES THROUGH THE READYNAS. you MUST TAKE OUT THE DRIVES ONE BY ONE AND HOOK IT UP TO A PC OR MAC PRO WITH SATA SUPPORT. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO UPDATE THE FIRMWARE. SO IF YOU HAVE A HOUSE WITH ALL MACBOOK OR MBPS AND NO PC DESKTOPS.. YOU ARE OUT OF LUCK. it's like a time bomb... so sad.

THE READYNAS DUO DESERVES 10 STARS. it's a sexy looking machine with great software. looks super duper sturdy and will last me for 20+ years. i took away 1 star for no time machine support and no JBOD SUPPORT :(

I selected this product as a replacement for my dead network file server in my small home-based office. I read lots of reviews and settled on the NetGear over the Buffalo line of products in large part because some of the Buffalo reviews complained of things disconnecting from the network. That was a problem that I never had with my old file server and didn't want to deal with now, so I went with the NetGear. Unfortunately, it has been a problem even with the NetGear. The NAS drive has dropped out of the network once, but I have had individual workstations drop out repeatedly. I'm not happy about that and don't know what to do to stop it from happening again. But the NAS drive itself performs quietly and efficiently. If it weren't for the disconnection problems, I would give it 5 stars.

Wow, where to start. I've had this since August and so far, so good. I purchased an additional 1TB Seagate drive so I'd have the security of RAID. The drives are hot-swappable so just pop it in and it automatically detects and synchs it. This is connected to my wireless router via ethernet cable. I use it to wirelessly back up my two Macbooks with Time Machine. This takes some configuring but once it's done it works great! There is an entire ReadyNAS forum which contains directions on how to do this (Google it). I also have my Samsung laser printer connected to the ReadyNAS via USB and my laptops can wirelessly print to it. Of all the network storage devices I researched, this one had the best reviews and most features for the price. You won't be disappointed.

I have to say that I will NEVER buy a netgear readyNAS DUO ever ever again. For the last year, it has frozen, lost its shares, and now just blinks for DAYS. Tech support is useless - just look at the general comments from the user community - there is no effort or even help with the arcane and STUPID error codes for the various boxes.

Now, I'm stuck with a box that blinks 4 times for days ("flash error") - OK, so now what? You get 90 days of free support, then you are stuck.

The Radar app is crap - totally arcane on my mac - unless you are an IT guy, forget it.

Just move on - I went to the WD My Book 4TB for about the same $$$.

Its crap like this that makes me shy away from netgear for anything.

I'm very happy with my ReadyNas duo. I was easy to set up and saved me from losing a lot of data. I would definitely recommend it to friends. However, be VERY careful when adding hard drives. The ReadyNas has a very specific hardware compatibility list for supported hard drives so make sure you only use hard drives from the list and be very sure to check the "notes" section of the list. Sometimes, only a very specific firmware version of the HD is supported and it is difficult to make sure you get the right firmware if you order from online retailers (who doesn't?).

My recommendation is to use the administration utility and check with HD came with your duo and just buy exactly the same model when adding a HD to your ReadyNas.

Netgear's ReadyNAS Duo is one extremely solid piece of kit. From the moment you take it in your hands you'll be surprised at the solid weight, feel and case construction of this little black box. The ReadyNAS Duo feels almost industrial-strength and makes other PC hardware attachments with cheap plastic casing seem like toys in comparison. Right off the bat, as first impressions go the ReadyNAS Duo gets a big thumbs up for exuding sexy form factor design and quality in spades.

Setup couldn't be any easier. Getting it up and running took, literally, less then 10 minutes. Unbox the device, use the included ethernet cable to plug the device into your network router and install the Netgear software to your host PC. Bang, Bang, Done. Once I got my network to recognize the device (no problems there) I was really surprised at just how whisper quiet the drive is while in full operational mode. After spending a few hours transferring various media files I felt some slight heat radiating from the drive but nothing really to be concerned about. In fact, the low power consumption of the Duo is worth noting - in its idle state the Duo uses just 27 watts of power and only a few more when the disk is in use. In disk spin down mode, a mere 12w is used.

My current home network setup consists of a desktop PC, a wireless laptop, a series 3 TiVo, a PS3 and a PSP. The Duo is a terrific addition for my home needs as I was able to fill it with 30 gb's of MP3's, 15 gb's of photo images and a 100 gb's of home videos, etc. and still had hundreds of gigabytes to spare. Because the drive is networked and piped through ethernet cabling transferring large data files from the PC to the Duo is blazing fast. Magnitudes faster then going through USB2.0/firewire which is the speeds I was previously accustomed to. I've now been using the Duo for 2 solid weeks with zero problems or hiccups to report thus far. Using a NAS device for the first time has really been a nice change as I no longer have to rely on keeping the desktop PC powered up 24/7 in order to allow my various networked devices access to my music, photos, videos, etc. Those of you looking for a decent media server option to put your PS3 and set-top media boxes to proper use will find immense value and functionality from the Duo.

In any case I would highly recommed the Duo to anyone in need of a Network Attached Storage device. Sure, the price is a bit higher than your run of the mill external hard drives but what you are paying for is the solid overall construction of the Duo, a terrific 3 year warranty and oodles of various functionality to meet the needs of various types of users. In my 2 weeks of usage I've barely scratched the surface of what the Duo can do as my needs on a home network are fairly standard - but rest assured that the Duo has all the bells and whistles (data backup utilities, BitTorrent functionality not dependant on your PC running, Shadow backups, a full array of email notifiable alerts, easy upgradability, setting user storage quotas, assignment of user logins, power monitoring, etc, etc, etc) that you'd expect from such a RAID NAS device.

I've had this product for about 6 months now and I am not impressed. The features are great, but I've had a lot of problems with stability and I am not confident keeping my data on it. When configuring the unit via the FrontView (their term for the gui), the unit crashes often and requires a reboot (yes, I am running the most recent code 4.1.5). When recently upgrading to the most recent code (4.1.5), the upgrade failed and all my data was gone!! Both drives! I called Netgear for support and had to drop $70 just to talk to someone, who didn't know what they were doing. It wasn't until I pushed the issue that I got to talk to someone with some experience. They were able to log into the unit, get it upgraded, and my data was back. But now I have no confidence keep my family photos, music, or video on the device.

****UPDATE****
After a new software update the unit has been solid for about a year, no complaints. Even have my HP printer hooked up to it for network printing, works better than the HP JetDirect network adapter I had before.

The power chord and Netgear RND2000 seem to be worst of enemies because they don't stay attached to each other. On the slightest move both seem to be in different directions. The audio and video streaming is another major issue. It is not good enough. Netgear's tech support is puts you on hold a number of times. Call the tech support only if you have ample time to spare. The manual for this product is of no use too. The inadequate quick start guide has no answers to most of the important questions a customer may have. This unit did not work with any of the four hard drives that I had.

As a file server this device is awesome. Set up is easy for both Mac and PC. Webserving is also a snap, as is the bittorrent add-on. The only junk here is the advertised ITunes streaming service. Not only is it unable read many mp3's and mp4's that ITunes has no problem with, but instead of giving an error message or skipping the files, the application completely locks up and has to be removed and reinstalled before you can try again (at which time it locks up again). A quick check to the Redynas forums shows the problem to be pretty universal and, if you have a lot of files in your ITunes library, the fix is complicated, time consuming and involves paying for extra software to repair music files tat ITunes plays with no problem. The software is a beta product but still, it is an advertised function of the device and therefore should work.

I purchased this unit to serve as a network backup disk for the network I was building. It took me 2 months to get it to work, no thanks to Netgear support, which was worthless. They assume you are an expert in Network server technology! The information on the web about how to setup and use was useless. And, what was more frustrating, was the restrictions they placed upon there so-called "rebate." I missed getting the advertised rebate as it took me so long to set it up. I was about to return it to Amazon, even had the return mailing authorization. But, I finally managed to get it to work after two months of trial and error! So, if you have no prior experience setting up network servers, purchase something else. As I said before, Netgear instructions and support are non-existent. I had tried to get help from Netgear, but was effectively ignored!

I'll always purchase something else than Netgear in the future!

Nice box that does the job. Getting the setup utility running in Linux was a bit tricky and required copying the files off the CD and running as root - see websearch for more on this. Changing from the default X-raid to RAID 0 required setting an option on boot after factory reset via the setup utility. That option allows two drives to be considered separate RAID 0 volumes where redundancy is traded for capacity.

USB handling is good. Tripplite UPS was detected when plugged in - works. Printer, even with Cables To Go - 16898 USB to parallel adapter, was recognized and shared. External drive plugged in was good to go. I suggested on the ReadyNAS support forums that they allow printer shares to stick because its name changes to untitled when the printer is turned off.

The root ssh plugin made it convenient to move files around to organize shares and see how the system was setup.

Web interface is OK and does the job for setting up users, groups, shares, and other features.

I have had this drive for about a week now and I love it. Not only am I able to use it as a NAS, but now I can use it with my Tivo too and I don't need to use Tivo Desktop to share and move movies around to other computers to watch them. I simply transfer everything I want to keep off the tivo to a machine with Tivo Desktop, then periodically, i will move them from the computer to the nas. After that every machine in the house can watch the shows without any lag or wait, its great.

There are still other features but my favorite is the ease of setup and that it works, tivo and music streaming, 2bay design for large storage and/or redundancy, built in print server, expandable/backupable to external USB drive.

I would highly recommend this item to everyone. i only wish it could be cheaper or the NV+ (similar to the dup , but with 4 bays) would come down in price.
