First impression was very good. Nice looking unit. Quiet. Small footprint. Easy setup (if it worked..).
I was going to use this nas to store my media library. I have a large library and quite a few files are in russian, polish, hungarian, german.. you know - all those strange looking characters. Guess what? SOME of them do not transfer correctly - filenames got truncated after a character the 323 didn't like. Upgraded to the newest firmware (out today Dec 18) - it changed things but didn't fix. OTHER files started to give me problems. For example - it removes the capital Ja (in russian) but regular ja goes through ok. Luckily for me Amazon pays return postage - it goes back to Amazon tomorrow.

Absolutly amazing. I use this to stream media throughout the house. Other computers can all access it. Media players can access it. Playstation 3 can access it and play the movies from it. All the while, I don't need to leave my computer on as a server anymore. This thing is always on with all the data on it everyone needs. No more copying and syncing hard drives everywhere, it's all here where everyone in the house can access it. Home networking FINALLY!!! It works in RAID 0, 1, and 5. Holds 4 drives up to 1TB each. I started with the DNS 323 which holds 2 drives and filled it up, so upgraded tho this one. I rally wish I had this thing 5 years ago! Highly advised. It works great.

UPDATE 5/8/2009: User account access control has an issue in all firmware versions, from the original 1.0 release to the latest beta. Basically the setting to allow All users to access a share disappears. Resetting to defaults sometimes brings it back, but shares configured to allow All users don't work properly. Weird issues with the All checkbox and shares disappearing are very frustrating. Dlink tech support has been aware of this for 4-6 months but no fix is in sight.

Well, it's now the end of June 2009, the DNS-321 has been out since August of 2008, and *no* firmware updates have been made available to fix the above issue yet. In addition, there are known bugs which cause the cooling fan to run continuously, and known incompatibilities with certain Hitachi drives, which have also not been officially addressed yet ("beta" firmware does not count).

Perhaps these issues will be corrected in the near future, but 10+ months is a totally unacceptable length of time to have to wait for a vendor to supply critical fixes such as the above. I cannot call the DNS-321 an acceptable choice for anyone looking for a reliable NAS.

Edit - the Hitachi drive issue was corrected in a firmware fix dated 06/15/09. The other issues noted above are still unresolved.

!1: Best Buy At my job, the guys who run one of the biggest and fastest supercomputers in the world just bought a few million dollars worth of solid state drives (SSDs) due to their rapid read/write speeds and low power consumption - so when I wanted to consolidate the stack of 1 and 2 GB camera SD cards in the closet, it struck me that what was good enough for the supercomputers at work was good enough for my little home network. Now I needed a network drive and enclosure.

As you'll see if you are able to access the chart, the $/Mbps ratio for this device is in a class of its own. It meets or exceeds the performance of devices that are an order of magnitude more expensive.

Combining the IOCELL 351UNE Network Direct Attached Storage (NDAS)enclosure with a 2.5" PNY 128GB SSD PNY 128 GB Optima SSD SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) P-SSD2S128GM-CT01RB and an Icy Dock 2.5" to 3.5" adapter 2.5" To 3.5" Ssd/sata Convert was as close as I was going to get to a fast read/write supercomputer flash drive on my budget. I ordered all three, hoping that everything would fit and play nicely together. So far, I have not been disappointed. The combined unit is cool, silent and consumes very little power without a fan, and just does its job. I can read or write to the drive from anywhere in the house, and my screen savers on the computers are now slide shows that randomly cycle through thousands of family pictures. Boring to anyone else, priceless to me. The software included with the device installed easily on both my Windows Vista (wired) and Windows 7(Wi-fi) laptops -- I have yet to install it on my wife's Vista laptop (Wi-fi), but if anything goes wrong, I'll update the review.

One note: other reviewers have complained that NDAS is not true Network Attached Storage (NAS) and that they can't access the drive remotely over the 'net. To that, I say thank goodness. NAS devices have IP addresses, and IP addresses can be hacked. The 351UNE is not hacker-proof, but miscreants will have a more difficult time finding your data on NDAS than on NAS. on Sale!

Made the mistake of buying this a couple of years ago, then shelved it for awhile. Now I've discovered that the Seagate drive shipped in it is bad and throwing an increasing crap-ton of SMART disk errors. Current non-beta firmware also has great behaviors like making shares you just renamed disappear (forcing a complete rewipe of the NAS to ever have a share by that name again), messing up created user accounts, etc. New beta firmware fixes some of that, but A) who knows to look for it? and B) who knows where to look for it? Not the average joe who just wants their NAS to work!

Customer support is absolutely terrible unless you're willing to troll message boards. The official support pages are contradictory and incomplete, and new versions of firmware are frequently only announced in forum messages. That, of course, is when they occur, since they insist on supporting every version of ReadyNAS to the beginning of time with a single firmware version, which takes the development cycle out to eons.

To be fair, the message board jedis are reasonably responsive (though I'm unclear if they all work for Netgear or are volunteers picking up the slack from this awful company) but for something that's ostensibly a failsafe solution, I don't trust it one little bit. Netgear has been churning out sheer crap for years, and it's a shame that ReadyNAS fell into their hole.

Two stars only because of the number of features and the user community. The hassle and lack of peace of mind isn't worth it though.

Works great as a network attached storage unit. Easy to set up, surprisingly small, and works fine.

But I have had no luck running an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer (which is listed by NetGear as a supported printer) through the built-in USB print server. If you check the ReadNAS forums, you will find lots of other people having the same troubles with various printers. I tried all the various workarounds people have suggested, with no success. I can send commands to the printer (such as head cleaning commands), but can't get an application to print to it. Finally gave up and reattached my Epson 2200 the old way through an Epson print server, which works fine.

Good choice if all you want is backup. Questionable choice if you are expecting to use the print server. I suspect there is nothing wrong with the hardware, but the NetGear software and tech support is lacking on this issue.

This is my second D-Link NAS, the first being DNS-323, which has all the features of this DNS-321, and also offers USB print server capability and music streaming. As I do not need those features, when my data outgrew the DNS-323, I decided to go for the DNS-321. I've been well-pleased with the decision.

It's very simple to set up. You don't need any tools, and just pop in one or two drives (I'm using two Samsung 1.5TB SATA drives), follow simple on-screen instructions to set it up, and there you go. I've set up mine as RAID-0 with a total capacity of 2.7TB (because manufacturer's 1.5TB = Microsoft Windows' 1.35TB or so), and it sits quietly in the corner of my office, connected to a gigabit hub. Every night my computers execute backups to it, and every night it runs smoothly. Out of sight, out of mind, except for the peace of mind coming from knowing that my data is backed up. It's very quiet and also stays cool. You can specify the drives' power-down period so that the drives are not always spinning. As others have noted, despite its gigabit network connection, you rarely get faster than about 120-150Mbit/sec (and that's when transferring large--hundreds of megabyte--files; smaller files, such as images from digital cameras, will slow down the transfer speed very significantly); this seems to be fairly typical of home NAS enclosures in this price range.

All in all, I'm very happy with the DNS-321 for my backup solution. I wouldn't recommend it as a live, online data storage for your everyday files due to its less-than-stellar transfer speed, but for routine, scheduled backups--it's a stellar product.

One more note about backups not pertaining to this drive: If you are serious about backing up your data, be sure to store a set of data away from home--at work or at friend's/relative's house--as a safeguard for those times of emergency when you can't get back to your house to retrieve your valuables. In addition to my NAS boxes, I keep two sets of backup drives, one at home and one at work, and rotate them every month or so.

!1: Best Buy This is my third D-Link NAS. I bought a DNS-323 one year ago and it has been on ever since, serving up files reliably to my PC/Mac home network, downloading torrents, and streaming videos to my PS3/XBOX 360 (after installing Twonky Media Server). Based on my mostly positive experience with D-link products and price-to-features ratio, I decided to stick with the brand. I had wasted money on a Galaxy Metal Gear NAS, and read mostly lukewarm reviews for Netgear, Iomega, Linksys, and other makers. Other NAS devices like the DLNA-enabled Buffalo Technology LinkStation Live were attractive, but their price point or storage capacity was not. I need a large number of bays to create a centralized media server.

When I outgrew the DNS-323, I bought a DNS321 2-bay when I really should have applied that 0 toward this 4-bay product instead. I wanted to consolidate the half dozen 1 TB external drives I had sitting around and network them so I didn't have to keep plugging and unplugging USB cables when I wanted to retrieve files. My home network is heterogeneous and I also needed the ability to write large files (4 GB+) to the drives. FAT32 is the only mutually writable format across XP and Mac, but it has a 4 GB filesize limit, making it impractical for my movie storage needs. The D-Link uses a Linux file system (ext2 or ext3, your choice), so filesize concerns are now gone.

I've had this product for a week, and so far so good. The device can be configured from any web browser, so you don't need the CD (which is a Windows-only configuration app). I have 1 TB Hitachi and WD drives inside. Build quality is solid (made of thick aluminum). It's a brick of a device and looks quite durable.

For the price, I am not expecting world class security and many bells and whistles. I just need it for storing my personal files and media on my home network, and stream them, and for that, it works to my satisfaction. The iTunes server works very nicely. For file transfers, I FTP to it and do all my copying that way. For some reason, the Mac is a lot faster (20MB/sec) than copying from XP (10MB/sec). Vista is the worse, and I usually get 5MB/sec.

It would've been really great for D-link to include BitTorrent support for this, like the DNS-323. Maybe in a future firmware update.

All in all, I'm quite happy with this product. I don't place heavy expectations on it and don't demand ,500 server performance from a 0 device. It was the cheapest 4-bay NAS I could find for the features I wanted and gives great overall performance for the price. You can install telnet on it (look for Fonz's funplug) and open the device up to more hacking if you are so inclined.

For those of you wish to use a hard disk lager than 137 GB as NAS on your network with this product, the following steps work for me.

1. Download a freeware by CompApps "SwissKnife V3" from c/net's download.com on the computer that you can attach this enclosure through its USB connection. The link to the site is www.download.com/CompuApps-SwissKnife-V3/3000-2248-10070864.html

2. Install SwissKnife V3 then connect the enclosure (with hard disk in it) with the USB connection to the computer. When you star the SwissKnife program, the USB external hard disk should be recognized by the program.

3.Follow SwissKnife's instruction to format the whole disk (if you want the whole disk to be used only as a network storage), or the size you want (if you want to use it as both NAS and USB disk). Format the disk as Primary partition and FAT32 file system. For Network Storage only, DO NOT format the disk into more than one partitions because this enclosure only recognize the first FAT32 partition not the other partitions on the Network. It took only few seconds for my 500GB disk to be formatted. Windows only allows 32GB of your hard disk space to be formatted as FAT32 but this program will allow you to format more than 32GB of FAT32 partition on a larger disk (for my case a whole 500GB).

4. After the hard disk is formatted, Turn off the power of the enclosure and disconnect the USB connection from the computer then attach the Network cable to the enclosure and your Network Router.

5. Turn on the power, and follow the manual's instruction to setup your newly added Network Attached Storage Hard Disk in the Internet Explorer from a network connected computer (with direct network cable connection to the router, not a wireless connected one.

6. One suggestion here, while setting up the SMB Server, Create a folder for each user of your network, or for the purpose of the folder (e.g. Video, Music, or Photo etc.) and move it to Sharing List. Later on all the users from your network can store their files to their own folder, or you can store and retrieve your various files easier.

7. Once the NAS disk is recognized with this computer under My Network Places, all the other connected computers (whether wired or wireless) should see it as well.

According to Microsoft the FAT32 file system has a limitation of 4GB for a single file, however, I have transmitted a 4.36GB file to the NAS disk from a wirelessly connected laptop without any problem....

I believe this is a good product but lack of documentation and software support, for its price as a NAS enclosure, I will recommend it.

Ok so I have only had this device a couple of days but there are some things that I have noticed.

First a couple people have said it does not work with Windows Vista very well on a local/private network. This is NOT true it is however tricky to get set up, after that it works fine. See directions below.

Second it is important to understand the the USB 2.0 (or higher) connection will transfer data four times faster than the Network connection, and the Network connection will transfer data ten times faster than USB 1.1 (or lower). So if you are trying to tansfer over 5GB using the USB 2.0 is better to use and less time consuming. The Network connection is fine for files of average size.

Third the FTP option works well for accessing data while away from home. To set this up it will require playing around with your router or modem settings to allow the device to be used for FTPing through port 21. You will also need to record the WAN address used. To access it while away just type "ftp://" and the WAN address then ":21" in your Internet Explorer browser.

Directions for Vista:
Set up for Vista is a little different because the default Windows Vista set up uses a different nameing system than Windows XP (Not Nexstars fault). You will need to know the IP address that you Nexstar is using while connected to your local/private network. You can find it by logging into your modem or router that it is connected to and viewing the device details. After you know the IP addess you can log into your Nexstar's set up menu by following the directions in the manual, except where it say to type storage you type the IP address. Once your settings are done you can access the drive. Just follow the directions in the manual for "File Access on PC", use the second method listed. All you are doing is typing "\\" and the IP address in Windows Eplorer or Internet Explorer, once the drive has shown you can right click on it and select "Map Network Drive..." and it will show up now in your "My Computer".

Update 3/22/09:
Just updating this. I've had it for a few months now and I'm beginning to look for another enclosure. I'm not sure if it's the drive I have or the enclosure itself, but there is a lot of vibration coming from the unit. I stuck some business cards in the gaps of the case and it took out some of the vibration but there is definitely still some there.

I like the way it looks with the rest of my Apple stuff, but now it just looks silly with business cards stuck in it. I'd take off a star if I could because of the noise and vibration coming from the unit.

This is a nice little unit; I purchased this diskless unit (RND2000) and added Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS (although it is not on the Netgear compatibility list). Works just fine, and was more cost effective to do this, as opposed to purchasing the RND2110 (with the 1Tb drive). Both units showed up the same day - I popped in the drive, plugged in the network cable (provided) and powered it up - after about 30 minutes, the pulsating blue light turned to a steady blue, indicating the setup process was complete, and I was ready to go! I've been looking for a RAID-1 NAS box for home for a while. Then after reading lots of reviews I decided to buy this one. I've had it for about 3 weeks, and so far it's been great. Easy to set up, fast and it powers down the drives when inactive (I love this feature). Good job D-Link! I got burned with you a long time ago (with a webcam that I could never get to work) but it looks like you learned from your mistakes :)

Although I'm not an IT professional, I have considerable experience working with computers. After painfully experiencing data loss with a previous NAS product, I chose ReadyNAS because of Netgear's reputation, warranty and what I perceived was the likelihood of good product support. Six months after trying to set up a lousy ReadyNAS Duo in my home to house our documents and media, I WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER NETGEAR NAS product if it were the last company on earth.

To begin with, you better know a lot about computers if you even expect to get a windows or mac computer to even see this thing on a network, much less reliably store your files for you(much much less use advanced features like the iTunes Server!). Six months after purchase the product manual is STILL not available online. For example, there is NO WAY my wife, who is a very intelligent woman with great experience using microsoft office, email, and adobe photoshop, could have EVER POSSIBLY gotten this thing configured to even show up on one of our computers.

I originally set my device up as RAID 1, preferring to avoid any of that proprietary XRAID stuff. This week I accidentally happened to see that it had spontaneously switched itself to XRAID. Since there is no manual, and the web page interface is anything but intuitive, I called tech support. I had actually paid over $100 extra to extend my tech support after purchase, but only after being assured I would have access to senior level tech support 24/7. FALSE. I just spent over 45 minutes on the phone with several individuals from half way around the world. In addition to having to ask them repeatedly to speak up so I could hear them, it took that long for them to actually repeat back to me what my complaint was. All I wanted to know was how to switch the stupid thing back to RAID 1. After several instances of waiting on hold for 5-10 minutes at a time, I was given the conclusion that this would require a senior level technician, none of whom were available (so much for 24/7!), and would call me back tomorrow.

Ultimately, here I am six months after purchase with an expensive paper weight in my hands. Unfortunately I work long hours and have had little free time to devote to this project, which is why I have had to put up with this garbage for so long. I have copied files to it, been told I don't have access to the files I created, and struggled to use the included NTI Shadow to create backups of my machines which have failed for myriad reasons. For me, the ReadyNAS experiment has been an abject failure. I really wish G-technology offered a NAS product, because I have never had trouble with any of their devices, and their tech support has been a pleasure. I guess I'll try Seagate or LaCie next.

I have not experienced any of the disappointments captured in other recent reviews. I researched several NAS products and this solution seemed the best value. I purchased the RND2000, which comes without any disk drives, and I purchased a WD Green 1TB with 32Mb cache. Right now I am only running one drive. I am quite happy with this setup. I use the DLNA server to serve movies and music to a D-Link DSM320RD media server, and the itunes server. I hope to use it with a DLNA-ready flatscreen in the near future. I also use it as a file server for central storage on my home network between two PCs, one of which runs a virtual machine as well. Several third-party add-on software are quite appealing. I will expand the memory in the future, but right now I do not need to. There are faster units, but I have not been disappointed with this unit's performance. The room it is in is typically 78-80 degrees F, and I only hear the fan run during periods of heavy reading or writing.

I have put the Netgear RND2150 ReadyNAS Duo 500 GB Desktop Network Attached Storage through the paces and for me it has passed with flying colors. I own a lot of external storage, and I've configured plenty of NAS devices for work and for home use. While the Netgear lineup of ReadyNAS devices are expensive, the extra features will put them over the top for many demanding users.

So ultimately, you will have to decide whether the extra features you can use with this guy are worth the cost. Alternatively you may decide you would rather stick to the external USB or firewire drives connected directly to you PC like the Western Digital 750 GB 7200RPM 16MB External Hard Drive. And there are middle of the road options like Drobo that offer some of these features at slightly lower cost. For me the answer to whether the ReadyNAS features are worth it is undoubtedly "Yes."

For starters, one of the biggest features isn't something many people will do right away, but rather something for down the road. You can change your drives yourself! That is a huge feature, that will allow you to add larger drives as they become cheaper. Alternatively you can add a second hard drive for RAID mirroring to give you an instant backup of your backup.

The ability to schedule downloads is going to become more and more important to people over time. I can tell you after testing it exptensively it has worked for me.

Also the easy networking really does allow you to set up secure shares very quickly. This is much easier than sharing an attached external hard drive like you can through your computer OS software. Many people never even get to the point where they are comfortable with those configs.

The connectors also allow you to daisy chain additional external drives off the back to add storage. Or you can hook up a USB printer for a print server. Once again, some other drives offer some of these features, but none offer all of them.

And installing this guy is "relatively" easy, although I still wouldn't be surprised if total novices still sought help. For the most part, once you set things up they will run on their own.

Unfortunately, you can't allocate both drive bays for online storage, at least not in a supported configuration. Still, I've got a pretty good feeling that limitation won't last forever. A minor firmware change to the raid controller bus along with a software update could easily make that possible.

Yes, the WD drives I love and LaCie and every other external hard drive is more economical. But none of those allow the easy expansion and longer useful life you will get out of this. When you add in the world of features this guy is ahead, it's clear that this is for more demanding users.

Love it. Set up was nice and easy. I'm not a hardcore user who has done any hacks or anything like that. Just set it up to be a simple storage drive and it works perfectly, especially on my gigabit LAN via DLink dir-655. Mapped the drive in windows so it acts as a local hdd. I've had it running for about 8months now, w/ no problems what so ever. Love it!

This is really a great machine. I am convinced that those folks who had data destroyed were not following the directions. This machine takes a little time, but I feel so much better with it protecting all of our data/pictures/music/etc.

I purchased the base model and then added two (2) 1000GB Seagate ST31000333AS for less than the price of the upgraded, 1 drive model. Now I have 1 TB of storage with two drives mirroring each other; the only thing that can bring us down is a fire.

You just have to take it slow. Install the unit and let it configure (about an hour if I remember), install the 1st big drive in slot 2 which will configure and then mirror the first drive (but only at the size of drive 1, 500GB, took about 4 hours), then slide out drive 1 and replace with 2nd big drive (drives are hot swappable, took about 4 more hours). Finally, it will want you to reboot the unit so it can realize the full 1TB of space. Took about 1 more hour.

All the while, it e-mails you the status of what it is up to so you know what to do next (if you fill out the proper fields) The Itunes server works well too (it took about 3-4 hours to find all of the 68GB of music I have). I haven't yet tried out the functionality of inviting family to look at pictures, but I find that a much better option then sorting out which pictures to sent to who.

I just bought this device and wanted to share some key points with you.
By the way I upgraded the firmware to the latest version 1.2b.

1) The drive can not be configured in any way until you install a harddrive and let the NAS format it. This means that if you don't pick a drive that the original firmware supports your out of luck.

2) There are far to many Firefox related bugs to mention so if you want to configure this drive make sure you can access the NAS from the IE browser.

3) They still have bugs related to file names. I have gotten numerous warnings that a file name is too long. However, the file name is usually less than 30 characters. I have made tests and found that file names that it originally reported as an error can actually be copied to the NAS individually with out error. I think the error arises when trying to copy directories of thousands of files. Also it is a bit scary when it messes up due to this warning. For me it created an entire subtree where every file and directory name was truncated to 8 characters. It does seem however that if you choose the "auto rename" option when you get this error everything works fine (however, I haven't tested fully).

4) Their online support sucks. Every inquiry has resulted in email telling me to call their sales department, which is pretty much useless. I have contacted a support rep by phone and she was helpful but not past basic configuration.

I am still hopeful for this device, I think with proper monitoring of file names I might still be able to use it. Network setup was a snap, all of my systems on my network easily found the device and mapped a drive to it. I have set up the FTP features but have not yet used them. Also they seem to be producing firmware upgrades fairly fast so hopefully they will continue to fix these problems in the near future. Also a lot of people reported having problems with the ext3 file system. In the latest firmware they removed this option.
